Plus Minus Notation

An even better way to show the amount of uncertainty in a number is to use plusminus.gif (54 bytes) notation.  When you do this there is no question about how many significant digits there are in a measurement.

For example, if a ruler measures to plusminus.gif (54 bytes) 0.02 cm, then you can specifically record the number as 9.60 plusminus.gif (54 bytes) 0.02 cm.

The last digit recorded must be the same as the uncertainty
